Surrogacy babies born in Australia – 2025

There are less than 150 surrogacy babies born in Australia each year. There are many more children born via international surrogacy. In fact, 75% of children born via surrogacy for Australian intended parents are born outside of Australia. The low number of Australian surrogacy babies born may be due to a number of factors, including that there are prohibitions on advertising; surrogates are not compensated in Australia, and we have a patchwork of laws that make it difficult to navigate surrogacy in Australia.

80% of surrogacy arrangements are between existing friends and family. The remaining 20% find each other on social media. There are no legal matching services in Australia, so many intended parents find it easier to head overseas to find a surrogate.

2025 was a bumper year for surrogacy babies born in Australia. Here’s a few highlights from the families I helped along the way:
🥳 90 surrogacy babies were born!
💜 More girls were born (53%) than boys (47%).
💉87% of babies were born via gestational surrogacy, and  🐳 13% via traditional surrogacy.
👬 We had one set of identical twins!
💕64% of births were for single mum and mum+dad families, and 36% were for single men and gay couples.
🩷 90 births – nearly 90 different names! A few themes with Theodore, Teddy and Ted, Evie and Evelyn. Harper and Remi were popular too, and three babies named Tilly, Tally and Tully!
